Hezbollah has accused Israel of conducting military operations in Lebanon as part of a coordinated effort with the United States to pressure the Lebanese authorities, claiming the campaign is intended to advance political and security objectives. The allegation comes amid continued Israeli military activity in southern Lebanon and growing disputes over Hezbollah’s weapons and the authority of the Lebanese state.
Hezbollah said the Israeli actions were aimed at forcing Lebanese authorities to implement what it described as “known agendas” with clear objectives. The group’s assertion about U.S.-Israeli coordination could not be independently verified. Official statements from Beirut, however, confirm that Lebanon is under pressure to strengthen state control over military decisions and territory while simultaneously demanding an end to Israeli attacks and a full Israeli withdrawal.
The Israeli military has confirmed recent operations around the Ali al-Taher ridge in southern Lebanon. The Israel Defense Forces said on Sept. 3 that its forces had established operational control over the area and cleared two underground Hezbollah structures, which it said contained command facilities, weapons rooms and other infrastructure. Israel said the operations were intended to prevent attacks against its forces and civilians.
The Lebanese government has taken a parallel but distinct position. President Joseph Aoun has condemned Israeli attacks while also opposing the use of Lebanese territory for military operations outside state institutions. The Lebanese Cabinet has ordered a ban on Hezbollah’s security and military activities and called for its weapons to be placed under state authority.
Prime Minister Nawaf Salam said on Sept. 3 that Beirut would continue efforts to secure the release of Lebanese detainees, obtain the return of missing people and achieve a complete Israeli withdrawal from Lebanese territory. He also said Lebanon would continue pursuing diplomatic efforts despite the difficulty of negotiations.
The dispute is unfolding alongside a U.S.-supported framework between Israel and Lebanon. A June 26 U.S. statement said Washington supports the two countries’ shared objective of achieving lasting peace and security, while Beirut has separately pressed for a clear timetable for Israeli withdrawal.
The situation remains particularly sensitive because military activity is continuing while Lebanon attempts to consolidate state authority. UN peacekeepers have reported continuing humanitarian needs in southern Lebanon, including damaged infrastructure and pressure on essential services.
The immediate outlook depends on whether military activity subsides enough to allow the Israel-Lebanon negotiating track to advance. Further Israeli operations, Hezbollah responses or progress on weapons and withdrawal issues could determine whether the current confrontation remains limited or develops into a broader escalation.
