Talks between Iran and Oman have been held on developing a temporary joint corridor for navigation through the Strait of Hormuz and a joint venture to mine-clear the waterway. These talks were held in Tehran by the foreign ministers of both countries – Abbas Araghchi of Iran and Badr al-Busaidi of Oman.

Araghchi and Albusaidi discussed a proposed framework that “includes the establishment of a temporary joint navigation corridor through the Strait of Hormuz and an agreement to implement a joint project to clear the strait of mines”.

Discussions will continue between the two countries to reach an agreement “on a permanent navigation corridor and future arrangements for managing the strait, alongside establishing a mechanism for exchanging information, managing navigation traffic, and providing related navigational and security services”.

The Strait of Hormuz is much more than just a passageway. According to the International Energy Agency, some 20 million barrels of crude oil and petroleum products daily passed through the strait during 2025, comprising about 25% of international oil maritime transport. 

The strait is 29 nautical miles in width at its smallest point and the energy importance of the strait goes beyond oil. Some 20% of international trade in liquefied natural gas transited the strait in 2024, mostly by Qatar and UAE.

The mere presence of mines can impede passage of ships even when a shipping lane is officially still open. This comes at a time when the US has reported that its navy has either removed or destroyed mines in the major shipping lane.

“Israel is eliminating the work of UNRWA everywhere. They have attacked the work of UNRWA in Gaza; they have prevented UNRWA from doing its work for Palestinian refugees in Gaza, which represents 70 percent of the population there. So it is an overall attack on all Palestinians, all over Palestine,” Barghouti said.

“It’s part of Israel’s attack and conspiracy to conduct another ethic cleansing against those Palestinians who remain in Palestine and that is why it is very dangerous. Israel would not have been encouraged to go as far as closing all these institutions and violate all these international laws if it wasn’t for the position of some countries like the United States to stop supporting UNRWA,” Barghouti warned.
