The Asagba of Asaba, His Royal Majesty, Prof. Epiphany Azinge, has said the newly constructed jetty at Cable Marine Point, in Oshimili South Local Government Area, built by the State Government through the Directorate of Transport, would power trade and water transportation in the area.
Azinge made the statement during the inspection of the jetty with the Commissioner for Transport, Mr Onoriode Agofure, the Functioning Permanent Secretary, Engr. Victor Omoniyi; the Director of Marine Transport, Engr. Ufuoma Edu; and other officials of the Directorate.
Speaking during the inspection, the monarch described Cable Marine Point as a significant business hub where traders from different parts of the state converge to conduct business.
He recalled that, as far back as the 1960s, the area served as an important transportation route through which vehicles were conveyed from the eastern part of the country to Asaba, from where travellers continued their journeys by road.
The traditional ruler commended the Delta State Government for the laudable project, noting that the newly constructed jetty would enhance business activities, improve water transportation, and provide more comfortable facilities for travellers.
Responding, the Commissioner for Transport, Mr Onoriode Agofure, expressed appreciation to His Royal Majesty and his chiefs for making time to inspect the facility.
He explained that the jetty was constructed to provide a safe and convenient landing facility for passengers, boat operators, and the transportation of goods.
According to him, the project is expected to improve water transportation, facilitate the movement of people and goods, and contribute to the economic development of the community.
The Commissioner further stated that the project was in line with the MORE Agenda of the Governor of Delta State, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, particularly its emphasis on Meaningful Development.
He noted that the Governor’s vision was to transform Delta State into a tourist destination and a business-friendly environment that would attract investment, promote economic growth, and improve the quality of life of residents.
Mr Agofure also appreciated the Ministry of Works for its supervision of the project, as well as the contractor for the successful execution of the construction.
The contractor explained that the jetty was designed and executed in accordance with the required engineering standards to ensure its stability, durability, and safety.
He stated that the facility would serve as a safe landing point for passengers and boats, while supporting the movement of goods and enhancing commercial activities within the community.
He expressed confidence that, with proper maintenance and responsible use, the jetty would serve the people effectively for many years.
