China Merchants Energy Shipping has secured a significant position in the developing Simandou iron ore trade through a long-term transport agreement valued at a minimum of $2.8bn, according to Splash247. The Shanghai-listed company, also known as CMES, said its dry bulk division Hong Kong Ming Wah signed the 25-year transportation agreement covering six very large ore carriers, with the total contract value over the period set at no less than $2.8bn.
The announcement did not identify the counterparty. When CMES first set out the proposed transaction in July, it indicated that Hong Kong Ming Wah was preparing to sign with China Mineral Resources Group International Supply Chain, which holds shipping rights for Simandou ore. At that stage, Hong Kong Ming Wah had already transported approximately 600,000 tonnes of cargo tied to the Guinean iron ore project.
The original proposal took the form of a 25-year contract of affreightment, with freight tied to a relevant Baltic Exchange route index and a cost-adjustment mechanism. At the time it was disclosed in July, the deal was still awaiting board approval and had not been formally signed.
Newbuilding programme
The signing complements China Merchants’ substantial VLOC newbuilding effort. In July, CMES arranged six 343,000 dwt ore carriers for up to RMB4.93bn, equivalent to $728m, at a yard controlled by sister company China Merchants Shipbuilding Industry, with deliveries scheduled across 2029 and 2030. The vessels were designated from the outset for long-term commodity contracts.
The order represented CMES’s first entry into new VLOC tonnage in more than ten years, following the 10 Valemaxes it contracted in 2015.
Simandou scale
Simandou is designed to produce as much as 120m tonnes of high-grade iron ore annually once fully ramped up. Chinese-controlled VLOC capacity is already becoming a defining feature of the Guinea-China trade, with dedicated tonnage reducing the volume of new cargo likely to flow into the conventional capesize spot market.
