Brussels Airlines management and aviation labor unions have reached an agreement resolving internal workplace disputes regarding crew assignments on commercial flights to Israel. Under the agreed framework, pilots and flight attendants can exercise their option to decline assignments on Tel Aviv routes without facing disciplinary measures or professional penalties.
The agreement followed consultation meetings between airline executives and union representatives after the Flemish Christian union ACV Puls filed a formal strike notice. Union leaders objected to management’s decision to shift the Tel Aviv route, which resumed operations in early August, from a volunteer-only basis to standard mandatory roster scheduling.
Trade union representatives questioned official security assessments regarding flight conditions into Israel, citing Belgian government travel advisories that recommend against non-essential travel to the country. Despite the internal disputes, Brussels Airlines confirmed that commercial operations between Brussels Airport and Tel Aviv continue as scheduled.
Airline management clarified established industry protocols that allow crew members to withdraw from flight rosters due to psychological or physical readiness concerns. “We took the necessary time to listen and respond to all concerns regarding the safety of our flights to Tel Aviv,” stated Nico Cardone, spokesman for Brussels Airlines.
Cardone explained that existing aviation industry procedures provide crew members flexibility when assessing personal readiness for flight duties. “There are procedures in the aviation industry that allow crew members to cancel their participation in a flight if they do not feel psychologically well,” Cardone stated, referring to the official unfit to fly status. “We emphasized that our colleagues can use this procedure as it has always been, without fear of consequences”.
Union leaders welcomed the clarification regarding employee rights but maintained criticism toward Belgian authorities for allowing commercial flights to continue. “These guarantees are important for the crew,” stated Jolinde Defieuw of the ACV Puls union. “As a trade union, we want every person to be able to carry out their work in safe and responsible conditions, we are glad that Brussels Airlines takes into account the physical and mental safety of its employees”.
However, the labor organization reiterated its opposition to operating commercial routes into the region under current security conditions. Defieuw added that authorities “do not take sufficient responsibility” and stated, “In our view, under current circumstances, no commercial flight to Tel Aviv should take place as normal”.
