Amid the confrontation between the United States and Iran, a series of oil tanker-related accidents are occurring at the entrance to the Strait of Hormuz.

The British Maritime Trade Organization (UKMTO) said on the 1st (local time) that an oil tanker passing near the Strait of Hormuz was struck by an unidentified projectile and was unable to operate.

UKMTO explained that the incident occurred at sea about 20 kilometers northeast of Lima, Oman, and the engine room was damaged, making it impossible to sail on its own.

A tanker captain who was passing by the accident site said he witnessed the explosion with a large spray near the ship. No damage was reported to the vessel following the explosion.

The sea where the two tanker-related accidents occurred on this day is the entrance to the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran declared control of the Strait of Hormuz, a major energy transport route, after the U.S. and Israel launched airstrikes on February 28 this year and has attacked merchant ships if they do not comply with instructions.

The ship’s shooting comes at a time of heightened tensions as the U.S. and Israel are preparing a large-scale airstrike targeting Iran’s energy infrastructure this weekend (August 1-2).
