UN Special Rapporteur on human rights in the occupied Palestinian territory Francesca Albanese said that destruction continues in Gaza, Palestine, despite the ceasefire. Therefore, in her view, it is premature to call Palestinians genocide survivors. In an interview with Anadolu Agency, she described the situation on the ground as catastrophic and “beyond description in words.”
According to Albanese, around 70% of the Gaza Strip is under the control of the Israeli army, which continues to destroy the territory. She stressed that referring to “genocide survivors” may create the impression that the danger has already passed.
According to Palestinian data, more than 74,000 Palestinians have been killed and more than 175,000 injured as a result of Israel’s war in Gaza since October 2023. After the ceasefire came into force on October 10, 2025, 1,454 people were killed and 5,090 were injured, according to the same data.

Restrictions on trade with settlements
Albanese also said that the situation in the occupied West Bank had deteriorated, including killings, arbitrary arrests, detentions, and restrictions on Palestinian communities. She welcomed the intentions of 12 states to restrict trade with Israeli settlements, which she called illegal, but expressed doubts about the scale of such measures.
In September, France, the United Kingdom, Canada, Denmark, Spain, Finland, Ireland, Iceland, Norway, Poland, Portugal, and Sweden announced plans to introduce or support additional restrictions, or to consider such a step. Albanese specifically noted British restrictions on goods from settlements and on financing their construction and infrastructure.
US sanctions
The special rapporteur said that US sanctions imposed on her in July 2025 had complicated her work and daily life. According to her, she cannot use credit cards, receive payment for other projects, obtain health insurance, or enter the United States. Albanese said that because of financial restrictions, she depends on assistance from her family.
