By Zoila Palma: Colombia has opened its embassy in Jerusalem, becoming the 10th government to establish its embassy in the city, as President Abelardo De La Espriella moves to restore diplomatic and economic relations with Israel.
The move marks a reversal of policies under former President Gustavo Petro, who severed diplomatic ties with Israel in 2024 over its military actions in Gaza, Reuters report.
Petro had closed Colombia’s embassy in Tel Aviv, recalled its ambassador and halted coal exports to Israel.
However, on Tuesday, Colombia reinstated its free trade agreement with Israel, which had been terminated under the previous administration. The developments signal a renewed commitment by De La Espriella’s government to strengthening cooperation with Israel.
At Wednesday’s embassy opening, Colombian Foreign Minister Omar Bula described Israel as a strategic partner and said the two countries were taking concrete steps toward restoring relations that should never have been broken.
Israel’s Foreign Minister Gideon Saar welcomed the decision, describing the embassy’s relocation as recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.
