JAKARTA – Iran is trying to prevent a new conflict with the United States (US) through diplomatic channels, but still states its readiness to face the possibility of a military confrontation. This was conveyed by Deputy Foreign Minister of Iran Saeed Khatibzadeh in an interview with Al-Jadeed television station, Friday.
“Most of Iran’s efforts through diplomatic channels and cooperation with mediators aim to prevent war. However, we are ready to face various scenarios if there is a new military confrontation with the US,” said Khatibzadeh.
He said Iran would take steps to strengthen its position in the region if it was attacked again. The statement reflects Tehran’s stance in seeking to open up diplomatic settlement space while maintaining readiness to face an escalation of the conflict.
Iran Investigates Situation in Strait of Hormuz
Khatibzadeh also highlighted the situation in the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic shipping lane that is one of the important routes for the delivery of oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG) to global markets.
He accused Washington of using the situation in the strait as an instrument in confrontation with Tehran. According to Khatibzadeh, the situation around the sea lane can be rearranged after the existing threats are eliminated.
The statement comes amid concerns over the impact of Iran-US tensions on freedom of navigation and international trade. Disruption to ship traffic in the Strait of Hormuz could potentially increase risks to energy supply chains and global market stability.
Iran Reiterates Position on Hezbollah and Lebanon
Regarding the situation in Lebanon, Khatibzadeh said that the Hezbollah movement made decisions independently, including regarding the possibility of continuing hostilities with Israel.
He also stressed that Tehran respects Lebanon’s sovereignty and does not interfere in the country’s internal affairs.
The statement highlighted Iran’s position on security dynamics in the region, including tensions involving Israel and the Lebanese Hezbollah group.
Iran-US Tensions Risk Energy Security
The Strait of Hormuz has an important role in world energy trade. Therefore, any threat to the smooth sailing in the region can have an impact on oil and LNG distribution, transportation costs, as well as international energy market sentiment.
In the midst of these risks, the path of diplomacy and mediation efforts is one of the instruments to prevent the escalation of the conflict. However, Khatibzadeh’s statement shows that Iran also maintains a stance of being ready to face the possibility of military confrontation.
Further developments will depend on the dynamics of Tehran-Washington relations, the effectiveness of mediation efforts, and the security situation in the Middle East region.
