Ghana and Gabon have strengthened their longstanding relations with the signing of a series of Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) covering transport, health, maritime affairs, education and diplomatic cooperation.
The agreements were signed during the three-day official visit of the President of the Gabonese Republic, His Excellency Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, at the invitation of President John Dramani Mahama.
President Oligui Nguema arrived in Ghana accompanied by a high-level delegation of ministers and senior government officials. He received a ceremonial welcome at the Jubilee House before holding a private meeting with President Mahama, followed by official bilateral talks.
The two leaders reaffirmed their commitment to deepening political, economic and diplomatic relations and pledged to transform their strong political ties into tangible economic partnerships that will benefit the people of both countries.
Discussions focused on expanding cooperation in key sectors, including trade and investment, mining, energy, agriculture, fisheries, transport, maritime affairs, education, health, tourism, digital transformation, defence and environmental protection.
“As maritime nations bordering the Gulf of Guinea, Ghana and Gabon have a shared interest in promoting maritime security, combating piracy and illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing, protecting the marine ecosystem and advancing the blue economy as a driver of inclusive and sustainable growth,” President Mahama said
The two Presidents also underscored the importance of leveraging opportunities under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) to boost intra-African trade and economic integration.
The bilateral talks culminated in the signing of several Memoranda of Understanding by officials from both countries. Key among the MoUs signed is the Transport sector.
The Gabonese President commended Ghana’s efforts to improve infrastructure and facilitate the movement of goods and services in support of Pan-African integration.
“I commend Ghana’s commitment to rebuilding infrastructure and improving the movement of goods and services in support of Pan-African integration. I have instructed my Ministers responsible for Infrastructure and Transport to prepare a detailed report within the coming months so that we can further strengthen cooperation in these areas,” President Nguema stated.
The two leaders also reaffirmed their commitment to the African Union’s Agenda 2063 and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, while pledging continued collaboration to promote peace, democracy, regional stability and sustainable development across the continent.
As part of his visit, President Oligui Nguema participated in a tree-planting ceremony at the Jubilee House, symbolising the enduring friendship between Ghana and Gabon.
He also visited the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park and Mausoleum, where he paid tribute to Ghana’s first President and renowned Pan-Africanist.
The visit concluded with a state dinner hosted in honour of President Oligui Nguema. He is expected to lay wreaths at the Military Cemetery in honour of the August 6 helicopter crash victims on Thursday, 2026.
President Nguema has invited President Mahama to undertake an official visit to Gabon at a mutually convenient date, an invitation which has been duly accepted.
